Reflection paper - Essay Example He accepts that his better half has an anxious sorrow which is the motivation behind why he removes her from the town to a far away chateau. He fills in as her doctor and accepts that she is absolutely powerless while the storyteller isn't at all fulfilled from her husband’s treatment yet she wants to remain calm. She can't voice all that she hates. She imagines that that is the obstacle among her and her wellbeing and that is the reason she doesn't beat that. She is permitted to think of her musings on ‘dead paper’ and those works must be kept hidden and away from others. The book centers around giving lady a good domain where would they be able to live as free-willed individuals and make the most of their lives simply like men do. The utilization of imagery is very distinctive all through the book as the storyteller attempts to introduce an obvious picture of what ladies were dealt with like, thinking back to the 1800’s. Back at her own home, she lived with John, in a brilliant open room which had yellow backdrop which she totally discovered repulsive and disturbing. She was not permitted to compose or to work, all that she was permitted to do was rest. The backdrop turned into a wellspring of response for her, she could gaze at it for a considerable length of time and not long after she began to inspect it, designs began to come to fruition. She could see pictures and everything began to change. She could see a lady in the slammer, all caught and with no chance to get out. She felt oppressed as well and every one of her feelings were coordinated towards subjugated ladies. She gets distrustful around her sitter and even her significant other and begins to feel that they likewise need to find reality behind the pictures of the backdrop. The storyteller gets crazy and tears the backdrop down which she appears is the best way to discharge the lady behind it. The backdrop was not the reason behind her downturn. She just got fixated on it since she didn't have anything else to do. She was likewise not

What And How Does It Affect Your Managerial Effectiveness

Executive Summary: Responsibility is a part of life where humans react physically or psychologically to favorable and unfavorable conditions. The attitude of the individual at that instant defines how he/she would react to the challenges of daily life and repercussions of decisions made to overcome these challenges. Such decision are results of the one’s locus of control at that moment. The types of Loci of control that affect me personally are high internal locus of control in turn driving me to assume responsibility in all cases. Most people don’t realize the extent to which accidental happenings control their lives. 3.2. There really is no such thing as luck. What and How does it affect? Research has found that an internal locus of control is not a universal solution for all management problems. Internal locus of control is not always a positive attribute. For example, individuals with an external locus of control have been found to be more inclined to initiate structure as leaders (to help clarify roles). Internals are less likely to comply with leader directions and are less accurate in processing feedback about successes and failures than are externals. Internals also have more difficulty arriving at decisions with serious consequences for someone else (Coleman et al., 1999; Wheeler Davis, 1979). It is important to note that locus of control can shift over time, particularly as a function of the position held at work, and that external locus of control does not inhibit individuals from attaining positions of power and influence at the top of organizations. Hence, it does not matter what your internal and/or external score, you can be a successful manager in the r ight setting, or you can alter your locus of control. (Whetten Cameron, 2016.) Pros and cons of tarriffs - 1256 Words

Week 3 Individual Project According to Essentials of Economics, a tariff is a form of excise tax, one that is levied only on sales of imported goods (Krugman, Wells, and Graddy 538). Tariffs are generally imposed for two purposes, to protect domestic industries and as a source of revenue (Tariff). The effect of a tariff on a small or a large country would be higher domestic prices because the cost of the tariff is passed on to the consumer (The Basic Analysis of a Tariff). Consumers would be deterred from buying that particular import because of the cost factor. It would also cause there to be a surplus of that import. A high tariff on imports would have the effect of switching from imported goods to goods produced domestically;†¦show more content†¦The IMF is interested in trade creation and has the power to lend money with conditionality (Rose 682). The IMF also lends to countries with balance of payments difficulties, to provide temporary financing and to support policies aimed at correcting the underlying problems; loans to low-income countries are also aimed especially at poverty reduction. Initiatives to Develop Singapore as a Legal Hub

Question: (a) Compare and contrast arbitration and litigation. Explain why arbitration may be preferred by the disputing parties in certain situations.Describe and discuss two (2) real-life situations in which arbitration was a preferred means of dispute resolution. You can review and research into online and other publicly available sources of information relating to such scenarios.(b) Recommend an arbitration venue (and identify a specific arbitration centre in that venue) in Asia. Provide reasons to support your recommendation. You can conduct additional research to supplement the notes in the textbook and study guide.(c) In 2014, the Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC) was established and a Bill was passed in the Singapore parliament to set up the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC).Discuss and analyse three (3) key reasons why there may be a growing demand by the international businesss community for such venues. You should review and research into online and other publicly available sources of information for your analysis. Answer: (a) Due to growth in the trade there is also increase in the number of disputes. This also includes foreign parties involved in the disputed and hence the traditional method litigation through courts does not give satisfactory results. It is said that the parties from other countries face the litigation process in the other national courts as a difficult system as they are not familiar with it. The litigation process is said to be a time consuming and costly system. Litigation is conducted in home country and the foreign parties claim that the home country gives benefit of doubt to its nationals which do not make the whole dispute resolution method fair. It is also accompanied with various social, political and cultural factors. Ultimately it is said that litigation does not give the desired result and so not an appropriate method of resolving dispute. Due to this the people go for another alternative method for dispute resolution. One alternative resolution is arbitration. This is a private method of resolution of dispute used by parties. The parties choose this method as it consists of one or more arbitrators who form an impartial tribunal. The parties to be on a safe side enter a clause in the agreement to choose arbitration as a mode for dispute resolution before signing the contract. This is done so that this mode will be taken if and when a dispute arises between the parties. Arbitration is chosen over litigation because it gives the parties an option to adopt the procedural framework which both the parties can adopt. There is no partiality or discrimination on the basis of different culture, language or legal and geographical background.(Spooner Moseley, ). Arbitration has also been used in the case of A. Bianchi S.R.L. v. Bilumen Lighting Ltd., 1990, where there was a dispute between Bianchi and Bilumen with regard to exclusive right to collect, trade and allocate its products in Canada and the United States. In the agreement between the parties there was arbitration clause to be used in case of any dispute. Bianchi went for the judicial proceedings for claim for damages due to breach of contract. The proceedings went and the judgment was made. But Bilumen filed a motion for discharge of the action, directing to the arbitration clause. Bianchi said it to be tact to get away with the decision made by the court. The court held that invoking the arbitration clause of the agreement and all the steps taken in judicial proceedings shall not rescind the arbitration procedure and hence referred the parties to arbitration (UNCITL, 1997). In another case of Vanol Far East Marketing Pte. Ltd. v. Hin Leong Trading Pte. Ltd., 1996, the claimant had a contract for delivery of fuel at Yosu, South Korea. The delivery vessel had more loading than was allowed and hence the claimant entreated demurrage. The request was made but the same was discharged in arbitration. The claimant applied for leave to appeal to the High Court. As per Section 5(2) of the International Arbitration Act, 1994 the High Court gave its decision by stating that the place where the major part of contract took place and the place is the subject matter of the dispute are associated with Yosu, Korea. Therefore, in this case the adjudication is of international level and thereafter the High Court rejected the application for leave to appeal. (b) The arbitration venue which I recommend in Asia is in Singapore. It is governed by two separate legal regimes pursuant to the Arbitration Act or the International Arbitration Act. The Arbitration Act is for domestic arbitrations and for those cases where the place of arbitration is Singapore. The International Arbitration Act is applicable to both international arbitrations as well as non-international arbitrations where there is written agreement eneters between the parties. This is stated in Part II of the International Arbitration Act and the Model Law to apply. The arbitration center for Singapore is the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC). This is the main arbitration organization of Singapore. It provides hearing and support services to the people. It is geographically at a very good location making it easy for people to approach it. Also technically it is very sound and people in Singapore have a lot of confidence in it being an independent neutral third-coun try on the legal system and culture of the center. The SIAC has a fast arbitration procedure, there is high confidentiality and the center has been given additional powers to take decisions. Singapore arbitration has been recognized by the New York Convention. The fee structure compared to many Asian countries is low in Singapore. Therefore, these factors make Singapore International Arbitration Centre as the most appropriate venue for arbitration in the whole Asia (Brown, 2011). (c) SIMC and SICC shall be the choice of venue by business community for legal facilities and resolve local and worldwide commercial arguments. There are many reasons for the business community to choose the same. The first reason is that SIMC provides case management and organization services. It also helps in getting a deal by providing mediation services and making the parties understand the whole process. The second reason for the choice of SICc would be that under SICC the parties shall have the option for confidentiality in their case. Though in general the cases take place in the open courts but when there is no major connection of the case with Singapore and where the parties want so then the court shall apply such measures as required in order to maintain confidentiality. The third reason for demand for such institutions is that the judgments made by SICC can also be enforced in other jurisdiction by opting for mutual implementation provisions, or by opting for a shared law act on the ruling debt. These institutions are milestone in the legal services and resolution of local and worldwide commercial arguments (Baker Mckenzie, 2014). References: Spooner G. Moseley A., Why arbitration? Impact Of Hurricanes In Florida Essays - Atlantic Hurricane Seasons

Impact Of Hurricanes In Florida IMPACT OF HURRICANES IN FLORIDA INTRODUCTION According to the National Hurricane Center, a hurricane releases heat energy at a rate of 50 trillion to 200 trillion watts, which is equivalent to the energy from exploding 10 megaton bombs every 20 minutes. With such strength, it is no wonder why these natural disasters have such large destructive impacts on the environment. Furthermore, hurricanes are of extreme importance to Florida, since they have historically plagued the state, especially in 1992 with Hurricane Andrew. Since it is certain that hurricanes will hit Florida and equally certain that biological populations (including people) will exist in Florida, there is a need for researching methods to coexist with these monstrous storms. IMPACTS OF HURRICANES First, to be able to create solutions to hurricane damage, experts must understand the physical manner in which hurricanes actually cause damage. Roger Pielke, in his hurricane book, The Hurricane, identifies four impacts of a hurricane: storm surge, extreme winds, tornadoes, and rainfall. These impacts are not completely separate from each other; they interact, but are different in scope. Storm surge refers to the rapid rise of sea level as a storm approaches a coastline. This is the biggest impact of a hurricane and accounts for 90% of hurricane deaths (Pielke 1990). Storm surges are caused by three factors. First, the overlying atmosphere pressure drops. Second, strong onshore winds cause a piling up of water at the coast. Third, the decreasing sea depths as the ocean approaches the coast causes the surge to get steeper. A storm surge of 15 feet corresponds to a level 5 hurricane, and a surge greater than 5 feet can cause major damage and loss of life. Since surges diminish as they move inland, surges are mostly destructive to beaches. Extreme winds, which carry a lot of kinetic energy, can cause significant structural damage and even endanger life with dangerous debris. The damage of winds is proportional to the kinetic flow, which is exponential. For example, a wind of 50 ms-1 is four times greater than winds of 25 ms-1. In addition, winds are not restricted to the coasts; extreme winds appear and are destructive far inland. Tornadoes are connected with extreme winds. Although hurricane induced tornadoes are not as strong as the ?normal? ones that appear in the Midwest, they still cause a lot of damage and are dangerous to life. Tornadoes are mysterious, but there are theories on their causes. Tornadoes form as a response to large vertical shears of horizontal wind that develop as lower level wind is slowed by ground friction. The large velocity shears tilt due to spatially varying vertical motion, which causes circulation to complete the tornado. Tornadoes can form far inland. Rainfall is the mildest impact, although it still causes major damage and erosion. Even weak tropical disturbances can cause extreme rainfall. This extreme rainfall can cause flash floods or cause body of waters to flood. Rainfall becomes excessive at and after the hurricane hits land. FLORIDA PROBLEMS WITH HURRICANES According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Florida had the most hurricane strikes from 1900 to 1996 of any other state in the United States with 57 hurricanes. Texas was a far second with 36. With such an intense hurricane history, it is no wonder why hurricanes are a major environmental problem facing Florida. For examples, a 1928 hurricane hit Lake Okeechobe and killed 1800 people (Stormfax Weather Almanac 1997), and 1994 Hurricane Gordon caused significant beach erosion along Florida's east coast and $275 million in agricultural damage by flooding Dade and Collier counties (NHC Hurricane Andrew 1994). The best example of the powerful destruction of hurricanes to Florida is hurricane Andrew. According to the National Hurricane Center's report on hurricane Andrew, total damage was estimated at $25 billion! Fortunately, good preparation prevented major loss of life as 26 people died directly from the hurricane. Over $2 billion dollars was needed to cope with environmental damage from the storm. Also, Ocean Oil reported that there were seven incidents of pollution from the hurricane destroying oil structures in the Gulf of Mexico. Perhaps worst of all, the $15 billion of damage to private property left many people homeless, with most of their possessions destroyed. This hurricane caused

Shakespeares Sonnet 18 Study Guide

Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 Study Guide William Shakespeares Sonnet 18 is justifiably  considered one of the most beautiful  verses  in the English language. The  sonnet’s  enduring power comes from  Shakespeare’s  ability to capture the essence of love so clearly and succinctly. After much debate among  scholars, it is now generally accepted that the subject of the poem is male. In 1640, a publisher named  John Benson released a highly inaccurate edition of Shakespeare’s sonnets in which he edited out the young man, replacing â€Å"he† with â€Å"she.† Benson’s revision was considered the standard text until 1780 when Edmond Malone returned to the 1609  quarto and re-edited the poems. Scholars soon realized that the first 126 sonnets were originally addressed to a young man, sparking debates about Shakespeare’s sexuality. The nature of the relationship between the two men is highly ambiguous and it is often impossible to tell if Shakespeare is describing platonic or erotic love. Summary Sonnet 18 is perhaps the most famous of the 154 sonnets Shakespeare completed in his lifetime (not including the six he included in several of his plays). The poem was originally published, along with Shakespeares other sonnets, in a quarto in 1609. Scholars have identified three subjects in this collection of poems- the Rival Poet, the Dark Lady, and an anonymous young man known as the Fair Youth. Sonnet 18 is addressed to the latter. The poem opens with the immortal line Shall I compare thee to a summers day? following which Shakespeare does just that, finding the youths beauty even more lovely and more temperate that that of summer. Here Shakespeare is at his most romantic, writing that  love and the youth’s beauty are more permanent than a summer’s day, which is tainted by occasional winds, blistering heat, and the eventual change of season. While summer must always come to an end, the speaker’s love for the man is eternal- and the youths eternal summer shall not fade. The young man to whom the poem is addressed is the muse for Shakespeare’s first 126 sonnets. Although there is some debate about the correct ordering of the texts, the first 126 sonnets are thematically interlinked and demonstrate a progressive narrative. They tell of a romantic affair that becomes more passionate and intense with each sonnet. In the  previous 17  sonnets, the poet has been trying to convince the young man to settle down and have children, but in Sonnet 18 the speaker abandons this domesticity for the first time and accepts love’s all-consuming passion- a theme that appears again in the sonnets that follow. Major Themes Sonnet 18 touches on a few simple themes: Love The speaker begins by comparing the man’s beauty to summer, but soon the man becomes a force of nature himself. In the line  Ã¢â‚¬Å"thy eternal summer shall not fade,† the man suddenly embodies summer. As a perfect being, he is even powerful than the summer’s day to which he has been compared up to this point. In this way, Shakespeare suggests that love is an even more powerful force than nature. Writing and Memory Like many other sonnets, Sonnet 18 contains a volta, or turn, where the subject matter changes and the speaker shifts from describing the subjects beauty to describing what will happen after the youth eventually grows old and dies. Nor shall Death brag thou wanderst in his shade, Shakespeare writes. Instead, he says that the fair youth will live on through the poem itself, which has captured the young mans beauty: So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, / So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. Literary Style Sonnet 18 is an English or Elizabethan sonnet, meaning it contains 14 lines, including three quatrains and a couplet, and is written in iambic pentameter. The poem follows the rhyme scheme  abab cdcd efef gg. Like many sonnets of the era, the poem takes the form of a direct address to an unnamed subject. The volta occurs at the beginning of the third quatrain, where the poet turns his attention to the future- But thy eternal summer shall not fade. The key literary device in the poem is metaphor, which Shakespeare references directly in the opening line. However, instead of using it traditionally- comparing the subject to a summers day- Shakespeare draws attention to all the ways in which the comparison is inadequate. Historical Context Little is known about the composition of Shakespeares sonnets and how much of the material in them is autobiographical. Scholars have long speculated about the identity of the young man who is the subject of the first 126 sonnets, but they have yet to find any conclusive answers. Key Quotes Sonnet 18 contains several of Shakespeares most famous lines. Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?Thou art more lovely and more temperateAnd summer’s lease hath all too short a dateSo long as men can breathe or eyes can see,So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

Biology Genetics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Biology Genetics - Essay Example Ito ET. al. (1996) and Ryner et. al. (1996) shared that, sex differences in mating behavior and male sexual behavior among the Drosophila may be attributed to a single gene. Fru gene is created out of spliced transcripts from four distinct promoters. Lee et. al. (2000) added that, FruM is manifested in w2% of neurons in the Central Nervous System of male. These neurons are arranged into 21 distinct clusters in several regions of the ventral ganglia and brain, including some of the areas or regions implicated in male sexual behavior. Similarly, the complex behaviors of insects are related to the organization of their nervous system; the neural pathways from sensory to motor circuits must be properly explored to understand their behaviors; and focused also in the body electrophysiological nature (Lee, 2000). The male P1 transcripts according to Demir & Dickson (2005), encode male-specific proteins (FruM) which are both important and sufficient for male sexual behavior. The aforemention ed literatures and those which were cited under the discussions and implications are quite reliable which supported the study. This research postulated that there are several fruGAL4-expressing neurons which are interconnected in a circuit and are involved in male sexual behavior. This circuit can be named accordingly: Sensory, central, and motor components. Basically, the study is directed towards exploration o... It also intended to assess whether "fruGAL4 reproduces the endogenous pattern of fru P1 transcripts". To achieve these, the proponents conducted gene targeting for labeling and manipulation of neurons, whereby they particularly add the GAL4 exposed reading frame to the fru P1 transcripts. In other words, various GAL4-responsive UAS transgenes were utilized. In fact, they also have stained brains and anterior nerve cords from fruGAL4, UAS-nlacZ heterozygous males with anti- "-galactosidase (anti-"-gal) and anti- FruM antibodies. The membrane tethered GFP reporter (UAS-mCD8-GFP) was utilized to closely observe the actual projection patterns of fruGAL4 neurons among the males and to find out for the potential differences in these projections among the females. Aside from this, to find out whether fru GAL4 ORNs work in male courtship behavior, an FLP-in strategy analogous to that one being used for their anatomical characterization was employed.Single-pair courtship assays were also prep ared, in which males of these genotypes were joined to the wild-type virgin females. These assays were carried out in the dark in order to get rid of any visual cues that might affect or influence courtship, thereby increasing the male's reliance on chemosensory cues. Behavioral Assays, Immunohistochemistry and FLP-in-Silencing Constructs are all very powerful methods and fitted for the study. If we take a closer look on the assumptions and methods presented, the authors considered the classical as well as updated theories and principles for its variables. Thus, a very strong theoretical basis in the pursuit of the approaches or methods used has been established. Approaches utilized are congruent to the expected outcomes.

Cleaning Assignment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Cleaning Assignment - Essay Example coli (Food Safety, 2014; FDA, 2013). The effects that are related to the risks to food safety include: having an unpleasant working environment where the staffs would not feel comfortable to work in an environment that is unclean as it poses a risk to their health. This would also be a propagator to low staff morale. Other effects are related to the daily business operations of the meat processing company as well as their reputation to the general public. The manufacturing company in this instance is responsible in the process of producing cook chill meat products. As such, the chain of production involves a number of sensitive processes all of which need to be monitored closely as they can be the source of food poisoning from common pathogens such as E. coli 0157. E. coli 0157 has been noted in many cases of food poisoning and outbreaks and its presence is facilitated by compromised hygiene practices in the chain of food production. The procedures in the manufacturing of the cook chill meat products include: vacuum processing – which was determined to be subject to microbial contamination by E. coli 0157. The next processes were labelling, packing and distributing of the products to the food outlets. As noted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) (2013), periodic cleaning as well as sanitation of the meat processing facility and equipment is a critical task in ensuring that Good Hygienic Practices (GHP) have been adhered to. Based on that, the benefits (positive effects) of cleaning the factory processing areas mentioned above include: The cleaning was conducted using detergents, disinfectants and sanitizers. Detergents were used since they simply required the use of water regardless of whether it was hard or soft water. Secondly, detergents had fewer reactions to minerals that were contained in water; hence, the detergent

Death Penalty in Canada Essay -- Death Penalty

Canada as a country is always in constant change. Whether it is in government, physicality, entertainment, or economy, Canada is a nation that prides on being unique and receptive to change. But when do these advancements, these abnormalities in comparison to neighboring countries, begin to diminish us as a native land? Or is there always an up side to the refinements and revisions Canada continues to make? Would this question be easier to answer if the consequences of our decisions on change were now life or death? To most, it just makes it that much more complicated. However, the topic of capital punishment is a problem that countries have continued to agonize over for decades, including Canada. So in what regards is capital punishment, and the sentencing of execution a good thing, and is there a line in which first has to be crossed in order to categorize the guilty? These questions have spun through the heads of the government and politicians before, and for now Canada s tands on the against-side of the incredibly blurred line, but as a country always in constant change, should and will Canada ever bring back the death penalty? The death penalty, also frequently referred to as capital punishment is the sentencing of execution for a crime. The most common crime referred to as a â€Å"capital crime† is murder and more specifically, murder in the first degree. In the United States, there have only been two cases in which the convicted was not responsible for a murder (Death Penalty Information Center, 2010). In one of these cases, Patrick Kennedy was found guilty in the aggravated sexual assault case of his step-daughter in 2003, and is now awaiting execution for his actions (Death Penalty Information Center, 2010). Privacy and Social Networks Essay

â€Å"Privacy seems to encompass everything, and therefore it appears to be nothing in itself† (Solove, 2008, p. 7). It is an oversimplification to define privacy as all what an individual owns. With the evolution of new technologies nowadays, it is very hard to define privacy because it varies from one person to another and from one culture to another (Solove, 2008). With the rise of social networks during the last decade, new views about privacy started to emerge due to its special mechanism in sharing information. Social networks enable users to instantly share information, thoughts, photos, products and videos with the many users in the network at once. Unlike other means of communication, the information in social networks can spread to hundreds of users in seconds. Then, the users who received the information may share it among their network, and then further to other networks, which will end up in spreading the information to millions of people in no time, just like a chain reaction. This new mechanism of sharing, which is becoming faster every day, raised new concerns about privacy among individuals and organizations. In spite of all these concerns about the personal privacy on the social networks, social networks websites are the most visited websites in the internet. For example, Facebook has reached 901 million monthly active users in April, 2012 (Hachman, 2012). Although social networks enables an easy sharing of private information about individuals or low profile information about organizations, individuals and organization should not be afraid of using social networks due to privacy concerns, and instead they should be more public and utilize the social network. Being public and open to the world is better than being private and closed because it enables people to learn from others personal experience. Naturally, any individual or organization benefits from communicating with others. Nevertheless, communication with others, regardless of the mean of communication, usually involves giving away some private information to the other. However, social networks empowered the world a new mean of communication that benefits all the users in the network by sharing private information. For example, an individual can share some previous experiences such as overcoming an illness, eating habit, or making a project. Being afraid of sharing experience, because of privacy, would only deprive others from benefit of these experiences. According to Tapscott (2012): Fully 20 percent of all patients with the fatal disease ALS share intimate information about their treatment and condition on the network PatientsLikeMe. com. And tens of thousands of others with rare diseases who use that website report that sharing has helped them better manage their illness. Because the social network enabled them to share information about their medical conditions, which is very private information, they supported each others with valuable information about their disease and inspired each others with their experience. Social networks enhanced collaboration, which in return brings benefits to all individuals, at the cost of personal information. Some may argue that because of posting private information on social networks, some employee may suffer from being fired from or being denied for a job. In other words, social networks negatively affect employment because they allow the employers or managers to access an employee’s or a job applicant’s private data. For example, Andrews (2012) states in her book that a high school teacher, called Ashly Payne, was asked to resign because she uploaded a photo of her on Facebook drinking an alcoholic drink even though it is legal to drink in her country. She also claims that employers â€Å"will not hire someone whose Facebook page includes photo of that person drinking or in provocative dress† (p. 122). However, the information on social networks could not be used against an employee or a job applicant because it is considered unethical and illegal. First, it is unethical to judge a worker from the personal aspects rather than working skills. Besides, Jarvis (2011) defines privacy as â€Å"the ethics of knowing† and publicness as â€Å"the ethics of sharing† (p. 110). Therefore, it depends how the individual interpret others information. On the other hand, employers can also look into a job applicant’s profile in a social network to see his/her previous experience in work. Second, it is illegal to make ecision on an employee or a job applicant based on social networks personal information. Furthermore, this act is considered discrimination and the company can be sued for this action (Waring & Buchanan, 2010). Therefore, employees and job applicants should not be afraid of posting information in social networks. Social network is a safe place to share private information with others. The main issue is that private data on the social network is accessible anytime and anywhere. Without a doubt, the privacy of individual’s profile data in the social network should be protected to make the network a safer place for sharing. Therefore, many social networks provide powerful tools to control the access on private information. First, social networks do not grant access to other users profile data anonymously. In order to access any data even if it is public, the individual needs gain the social networks trust by registering an account in the social network. This enables the social network administration control over the social network. Second, the user can choose who is able to view his/her profile private information and what information others can see. For instance, the user can block accounts, specify groups and set privileges. Third, social networks also provide a help center to report abuse of the services such as spamming, bullying or hateful speeches. The social network administration can stop any account permanently or even take legal action if an individual is reported abusing others privacy. Finally, most social networks provide a parental control to help parents control how their children use the social network. Since social networks rely on the trust between the users, these tools does not only make a social network a safer place, but also trustworthy. Richters and Peixoto (2011) performed a research to show the transitivity of trust in social networks. They found out that people decide who to trust based on other peers who trust. To emphasize this to the topic, users trust only specific users over their private information and thus they trust the social network. Conversely, trusting the social network increases the trust among the users. In addition, trustworthiness implies a social network safety, which in return means users being more comfortable sharing their information using the social network. For example, one of the reasons that made Facebook the most successful social network is the trustworthy of the users. According to Jesdanun (2006, as cited in Fogel & Nehmad, 2009), because Facebook was only restricted for students, the users felt safer to share data through the social network. Nowadays, Facebook is open to the public, but they are very strict in term of network safety. In fact, Fogel’s and Nehmad’s (2009) research statistics showed that â€Å"those who had social networking profiles had significantly greater mean scores†¦ indicating that they believed Facebook is a more trustworthy social network† (p. 175). For any social network to be successful, the social network has to maintain the trust of their users through the safety of the social network. Therefore, social networks are trustworthy over the users’ private in the social network. Despite of these control tools, some may argue that social networks still a potential threat to the users’ privacy. For instance, many believe that social networks made a fertile ground for identity theft and stalking. People usually fear the technology; because social networks are also considered one of them, every possible problem falls under the umbrella of privacy concerns on social networks. Privacy, however, is not only controlling the data access, but also controlling how it is used or interpreted (Boyd, 2010). Let us discuss these problems one by one. First, identity theft occurs when someone steals someone’s secret information and pretending to be that person. According to Jarvis, â€Å"[the identity theft issue] is less an issue of privacy than larceny† (2011, p. 96). Assuming it is an issue of privacy, suppose someone hacked someone else’s account or page on a social network, thus accessing or using the victim’s information. Should this be considered the social network fault? The user, the victim, probably did not take security precautions to protect what he/she considered a private data. Additionally, the social network provides tools to retrieve, to report or to suspend a stolen account. Second, stalking is obsessively observing an individual’s behavior or information. Unfortunately, stalking can mostly be from those who have access to the profile information such as friends and coworkers. However, it still depends on how they interpret the information. For example, if someone knew that his friend is getting divorced, he decides whether to support him, help him, or stand against him. Social networks’ databases do not only contain data about their users, but also how the users interactions with the social networks and other users. Therefore, the data in social networks are very valuable as some refers to it as â€Å"the new oil†. Social networks use these data, through data mining, to improve its services and to gain revenue. Most social networks gain revenue from targeted advertising. For example, if a user often reads about cars, or writes posts related cars, the data mining system is going to assume this user is interested in cars. Therefore, the social network shows that user advertisements related to cars within the user’s living area. Social networks created a new marketing option that helps the companies to expand their production and services (Andresen, 2011). On the other hand, data mining and targeted advertisement raises new privacy concern in social networks. For example, some users may feel uncomfortable when these advertisements are based on some information that were marked as private, a personal chat with a friend for instance. However, data mining and targeted advertising does not violate privacy laws or ethics. According to Seltzer research in data mining ethics (2005) â€Å"like most statistical methodologies data mining by itself is ethically neutral† (p. 1441). This is mainly because the data mining process is carried on by computer programs, which will not interact with these data the way a human would. They will not develop any judgment or feelings about the user no matter how sensitive the data is. Moreover, social networks provide advertisers with anonymous statistical data. In other word, advertisers do not know the identities of users in the statistics provided by the social network. In conclusion, social networks are new powerful tool for communication with the others. The data on the social networks are can easily be accessed anywhere and anytime, and therefore this created a controversial debate between privacy and the social networks. However, being afraid of using social networks would have only deprived the benefits of using these tools. Besides, employees and job applicants should not be afraid of using social networks because their information in social networks could not be used against them as it is considered illegal and unethical to be used against them. Nevertheless, social networks provide powerful tools to control over the user’s private information, thus implying that the social networks are trustworthy over private information. In sprit of all privileges control tools, many people believe that the social networks can cause problems such as identity theft and stalking. However, these problems are not necessarily due to social networks, but instead it is due to how people interpret the information in the social networks. As a result the, the user should be more careful when posting a sensitive data and think before sharing any information. Finally, because social networks databases contains tremendous amount of data, social networks created a new form of business using these data while protecting the identity of the data. Therefore, individuals and organization should not concern privacy when using social networks and utilize its benefits.

Use Of A Traumatic Brain Injury - 1117 Words

TBI termed as Traumatic Brain Injury is an intracranial injury that often occurs when an external force is applied on the brain. A 1.4 million people, every year in the United States experience TBI, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [2]. Approximately 5.3 million Americans live with long-term disability as a result of TBI [4]. Advancements in the field of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) has helped image TBI better. Techniques like Susceptibility Weighted Imaging (SWI), Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) helps in furnishing sensitive details like micro hemorrhages, white matter injury, and abnormal metabolic activities, respectively, in brain injury. In order to†¦show more content†¦A Computed Tomography (CT) can be used to inspect large hemorrhages, that could be surgically excised, but in case of small hemorrhages, it is insensitive. Small hemorrhages could be early contusions or diffuse axon injury ( DAI). SWI comes handy in determining such small hemorrhages and intracranial microhemmorhages. It is a high-resolution, fully velocity compensated, 3-dimensional gradient echo imaging sequence that is extremely sensitive to blood products in hemorrhage and deoxyhemoglobin in venous blood. Normally, CT and MRI would spot traumatic hemorrhagic lesions in cortical gray matter (GM), sub cortical white matter (WM), major white matter tracts, including corpus callosum and internal capsule, brainstem and in the ventricles. SWI helps in localizing microhemmorhages lesions at GM/WM junction. The research paper explores about a comparison of SWI and a conventional GRE performed by Tong et al. The outcome of it was a difference in lesion counts, which was highest in the brainstem/cerebellum and corpus callosum, while, lowest in the frontal parietal-temporal-occipital GM/WM. The research article also reviews a study by Wu et al about patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) using CT and SWI . The
